First funding period: Migrant Melodramas and Culture Clash Comedies: Creating a Turkish-German Sense of Commonality
With July 2019 the CRC started its second funding period and therfore initialized a shift and development in its research focus. The last four years this project concentrated on slightly different topics.
In the first funding phase, the subproject examined from a film studies perspective how films, TV series, and Internet videos work to create and modulate Turkish-German senses of commonality. We did not understand the media formats as representations of an assumed Turkish-German everyday reality. Rather, we were interested in how these formats, which are usually grouped under the label "Turkish-German," situate themselves in relation to the dominant audiovisual culture. Therefore, we analyzed the ways in which they appropriate the affect poetics of globally circulating films in order to determine particular, deviant, and competing positions in relation to popular culture - positions that can be described as articulations of specific senses of commonality. On this basis, the relationship between migration discourse and audiovisual media production can be readjusted.
