First funding period: Embodied Emotions and Affective Belonging in Migratory Contexts: Sufi Orders and Neo-Pentecostal Churches in Berlin
With July 2019 the CRC started its second funding period and therfore initialized a shift and development in its research focus. The last four years this project concentrated on slightly different topics.
This project explores how affective experiences of belonging are embodied through the practices of two religious communities (Pentecostal church, Sufi order) in migratory contexts in Berlin. By applying an ethnographic perspective, the project asks how these affective experiences are “semanticized” through the emotional knowledge that the two communities articulate with regard to their members’ families and socio-political lives. The project aims at establishing a wider research field on the “Anthropology of Emotion, Religion and Embodiment in Migratory Contexts”. Within the collaborative research center Affective Societies it shows how embodied emotions configure social orders and help to inscribe religious-charismatic groups in the urban space of Berlin.
