Shame, anger, empathy – these emotions have been central not only in the testimonies about sexual violence told through #NiUnaMenos since 2015 and #MeToo since 2017, but also in the reactions to these posts. During the third funding period, the project will examine feminist and anti-feminist discourses around issues such as abortion rights and transgender rights to understand and explain their affective dynamics. On the one hand, the project examines how affect and emotions mobilize such discourse, but also how emotions become contested in the process. On the other hand, the researchers in this project will analyze how the affordances of different social media platforms shape the affective media practices of the users. Applying a mixed-methods-design, the researchers will analyze textual as well as audiovisual material on Twitter, TikTok and Instagram.
